16th – 19th September

This trip was a quick dash to Bulgaria for three nights in the beautiful Western Rhodope Mountains region with the emphasis on seeing Brown Bear and other mammals, the birding being a sideshow.

We spent from late afternoon until gone midnight in a hide waiting for a bear to show but without luck. However, the following morning the food that we had put out for the bears had all been eaten and there were fresh bear droppings in front of the hide – we obviously gave up too soon!

Probably better off looking for bears in Romania.

Although we did not see a great number of bird species, just under 60, there were some good birds among them, including Woodcock, Black and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, Nutcracker and Wallcreeper.

We were based in Teshel and spent most of our time there, at the Trigrad Gorge and in the nearby mountains.
